Dreamworks GalleryApr 12, 2009 6:03 pm DREAM WORLDS: THE INSPIRED CONCEPT ART OF DREAMWORKS ANIMATION
APRIL 14 - MAY 15, 2009
The School of Art and Design is delighted to present a special opportunity to view an exciting array of materials created by DreamWorks Animation, revealing the behind-the-scenes artistry involved in feature animation film development. From its inception in 1994, DreamWorks Animation has attracted some of the most talented artists and designers in the world. Together, they have conceptualized ancient and modern worlds, designed beloved characters, and created for their sixteen films an ever-expanding universe of the imagination: diverse, stylish, humorous and fresh. This exhibition, the first of its kind to feature DreamWorks astounding creativity, will demonstrate the broad array of artistic skill sets needed to realize the characters and the look of a movie. On display will be numerous never-before-seen early concept works and character designs from the DreamWorks Animation archive, including 2-D and 3-D visual development drawings, paintings, backgrounds, film prints, character designs, animation expression sheets, rough maquettes of characters, and even miniature sets that helped the designers and directors turn their flat art into lush 3-D environments suitable for the big screen. We are very proud to share some of the hidden magic that has driven and sustained almost 15 years of creativity, and helped DreamWorks Animation become a leader in the feature animation industry. In conjunction with the opening of this exhibition, Guest Curator Rex Grignon and Production Designer Kendal Cronkhite of DreamWorks will discuss the behind-the-scenes artistry and the complex number of iterations it takes to arrive at a final design through a Question-and-Answer format. Grignon, head of character animation at PDI/DreamWorks, has recently been named SJSU's Animation/ Illustration's program first Distinguished Scholar. This public presentation, open to the public, will be held from 5 - 6 pm in the Music Concert Hall on the School of Art and Design on the San Jose State University campus. The public reception for the exhibition will follow immediately in the Gallery.
